What with Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM), GEL, and Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) designs; the proper care and feeding of your scooter's electrical system has been rendered about as trouble-free as it can get. However --batteries being batteries-- even these modern marvels of stored up go-juice require frequent recharging.

When performed correctly (and as soon as possible after using the scooter), charging a set of scooter batteries is about as complicated as plugging in the right amperage trickle charger with automatic cut-off and disconnecting it at the end of its proper recharge cycle. However it may be nearly impossible to fully charge an old battery that is nearing the end of its usable lifespan, or perhaps has seen too many seasonal extremes of hot summers and cold winters. It may be tempting to try and force a charge that the marginal battery doesn't want to take, but this is a self-defeating and often a dangerous thing to do.

An inherent issue with almost any type of rechargeable battery, whether it sparks your Jazzy, your Vespa, your car or your MP3 player, is the problem of overcharging. Too much charge can cause heat and pressure to build up to inside of the battery until it deforms the exterior case. Automotive and marine batteries --which are in fact just larger versions of scooter batteries -- have been known to burst after being grossly overcharged. Although I wonder if the tales of overcharged iPods and mobile phones causing house fires are more urban myth than fact; even these small lithium-ion examples might reach combustion temperature under the right circumstances.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 250px; height: 223px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aDtzkXEPXY0/Tni4-KxJG-I/AAAAAAAAACo/WSQODla0sgo/s320/faq-battery.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5654472710345530338" />

There are several ways your battery may try to tell you that it has been overcharged. Depending on your scooter model, very often the batteries themselves are hidden away under decks and panels, so it is a good idea to visually inspect them at the time of every recharge session. If your scooter battery is exhibiting any of these four symptoms, overcharging is probably the culprit.

Won't Hold a Charge
Overcharging a battery will degrade the lead plates between the cells, causing the electrolytes to evaporate, reducing its ability to hold the charge. Reduced electrolytes further increase the heat inside of the battery, which boils off even more electrolytes in a vicious cycle ad infinitum.

Overheats
As the lead plates degrade from the overcharging process, internal electrical resistance increases. This resistance is felt as excessive heat on the batteries' plastic case. This increase in heat further evaporates the electrolytes, causing even more destruction to the cells.

Leaks & Residue
Scooter batteries are supposed to be fully sealed and all but leak proof. The heat and pressure from overcharging can cause the outer case to crack and leak acid. Often corrosive "salts" are visible around the seams.

Warped, Swollen, & Busted
The most obvious sign of severe overcharging is a battery's case that has been warped, rounded, bloated or bulging. Excess heat and pressure inside of the battery can eventually split the case wide open, spilling acid. In extreme cases, a single spark from a bad electrical connection or even static electricity can ignite the explosive gas and spoil your whole day.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 250px; height: 242px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-B5GjY4LwwcM/Tnivg7ScbWI/AAAAAAAAACg/g68M7iamDps/s400/blog-battery.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5654462312369384802" />

The best charge for almost any battery is a slow trickle charge which cuts off automatically when the desired charge is reached. On the other hand, the worst charge for a scooter battery is a boost or jump from one of those high-amp automotive chargers. A boost charge is far too "hot" for the relative low-amp batteries found on most small scooters, and will probably damage the batteries as much as rejuvenate their power.

It cannot be stressed enough that getting a good scooter battery recharge starts with having the correct battery charger for your scooter. If in doubt, read your ownwer's manual.

Andy
andy@monsterscooterparts.com
www.monsterscooterparts.com/

Parts for Scooter Performance - Roller Weights

Parts for Scooter Performance - Roller Weights
by Andre Easter

If you are considering new parts for scooter high-performance, then upgrade your scooter parts 'must-have list' with a set of roller weights tailored to your riding needs. A set of new weights is an inexpensive addition that will enhance your scooter's acceleration and speed performance. Usually one of the easiest modifications that a scooter owner can do, a pack of six of these little rollers will make a big difference on how your scooter behaves in traffic.

Most modern motor scooters use the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) system that provides the smooth transmission gearing in the popular twist & go style of scooters. Roller weights are an essential part of the CVT variator, using centrifugal force to push outward and change the gear ratio. A lighter roller will require higher RPMs (and create more rapid acceleration) but will cut down the top speed. This may be preferable for urban stop and go riding where acceleration speed is of more concern than overall highway speed.

A heavier set of rollers will do the opposite; the lower engine RPMs needed to push the weights means a smoother, if less rapid acceleration. However the same physics involved will generate a higher highway speed. Think of the lighter weights for the city streets and the heavier ones for the open road; helping to make it sort of a 'town or county' decision that is best suited to the rider's personal requirements.

Although the weight of the rollers can be changed to achieve the desired performance, the external size must remain the same as that installed at the factory. Each CVT variator is designed to use a single roller size, with different weights being the only adjustment. Roller weights are identified by their external dimensions in millimeters, and their weight in grams. As an example an 19x17-11 roller is 19 millimeters in diameter, 17 millimeters in width, and weighs 12 grams.

Whether your choice is for a heavier or a lighter set of roller weights, try getting the very best quality weights available. Prima brand standard roller weights and Dr. Pulley sliding roller weights are two of the highest rated scooter parts brands currently available, and either will do an exceptional job. Something as simple as these aftermarket parts for scooter owners to install are an inexpensive and positive upgrade to any scooter's CTV unit.

For more information on roller weights, or any other parts for scooter performance, visit the experts at Monster Scooter Parts.

Article Source: EzineArticles.com

Recycle that scooter battery!

Battery Disposal and Recycling

Monster Scooter Parts cannot over-state the vital importance of recycling your old scooter batteries. Perhaps it is an unfortunate drawback of living in our modern technology-driven society, but today every one of us generates more and more hazardous waste. Even the small AAA and button-batteries found in hearing aids and personal electronics like television remote controls add to an ever-increasing mountain of toxic trash. The average sealed lead acid (SLA) scooter battery weighs about 9.3 pounds; other than the plastic case, most of that weight is in the form of lead "cells" and sulfuric acid.

In order to prevent these very toxic items from polluting the environment, it is now required by law to recycle your batteries. Beginning in 1996 with the Mercury-Containing and Rechargeable Battery Management Act (Public law 104-142), and further addressed by numerous laws in almost every US state and Canadian province, strict regulations govern the disposal of all battery types. The good news is that 97% of all old batteries are turned into new batteries, and this helps to keep the cost of new scooter batteries down.

Instead of allowing these hazardous materials to end up in the landfill --where the toxic soup of mercury, lead, and sulferic acid will eventually leak into your community's water supply-- proper battery disposal is essential. Many areas (but unfortunately not all) have a local or municipal recycling center that will accept used batteries; however this is not always convenient for the user.

Recycling Batteries at Monster Scooter Parts:
Monster Scooter Parts will accept used SLA scooter batteries from our customers as long as they are correctly packaged. The best container to use to ship your old recyclable batteries is the same shipping box that you recieved with your new batteries. You can even pre-pay the return shipping when you purchase your new batteries. Additionally, we strongly recommend using the USPS Priority Flat Rate Box shipping method, as it is in our experience, the safest, most efficient, and cost effective way to send batteries.

Packaging Instructions:

Step 1: Carefully pack the batteries tightly and securely to prevent shifting inside the box.

Step 2: Seal the box securely.

Step 3: Label the outside of the box: "Non-Spillable Battery".

Step 4: Ship the properly packaged and labeled batteries to our recycler's address below:

Monster Scooter Parts
ATTN: Battery Recycling
26262 Three Notch Road
Unit 24
Mechanicsville, MD 20659

Andy
andy@monsterscooterparts.com
www.monsterscooterparts.com/

Selecting a Scooter Battery

Selecting a Scooter Battery
by Andre Easter

Electric power chairs and mobility scooters have enhanced the lives of millions of people, but a mobility scooter is only as good as the scooter battery that powers it. Designed to be durable and dependable, almost any mobility scooter battery will eventually need replacement. Today, almost all electric mobility devices use a 24 volt system consisting of an electric scooter battery pack made up of two 12 volt units linked together. The differences in batteries can be attributed to two factors; composition, and amp hour ratings.

There are several terms that are generally used to designate the differences in electric scooter battery composition. These refer to the physical size and properties of the batteries themselves, and do not relate to power output or between-charge longevity. Any of these modern types will give excellent service as long as they are properly charged.

Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) Batteries
Unlike the old wet cell monsters of the past that could be "topped-off" when required, today's SLA batteries are maintenance-free, completely enclosed units where the electrolyte liquid (the battery acid) is completely sealed, which accounts for the term "sealed lead acid" as its common designation. Maintenance-free not only means no additional acid ever needs added, it also means that the electrolyte liquid cannot "boil out" or evaporate from out of the cells. The superiority of SLA batteries has long been recognized, and almost any mobility scooter battery used today is an SLA-type battery.

Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) Batteries
With a technology originally developed for military aircraft, AGM batteries use a fiberglass like mat to hold the electrolyte in a stable and spill-proof suspension that isn't as prone to suffering low voltage when exposed to cold temperatures. An additional advantage of the AGM system is the relatively quick recharge time. This is often the best possible type of battery for most scooters; however they may be damaged by being over-charged. Being hermetically sealed units, all AGM batteries are SLA batteries, but not all SLA batteries are AGM batteries.

Gel Batteries
The electrolyte in a gel-cell battery is not liquid, but is a gelatin-like semi-solid mass. Perhaps best known for being the preferred type of motorcycle battery, the gel battery offers several advantages over their AGM counterparts for scooter and power chair users. Not containing liquid, the gel battery will continue to work perfectly even if turned completely upside down. Without liquid acid, the gel battery produces no fumes and is the safest battery type for power chairs and scooters that are used primarily indoors. Additionally, a longer lifespan can be expected from a gel-cell.

U1 Batteries
The U1 is currently the most common size of mobility scooter battery. Note that the U1 designation refers only to a common universal physical dimension; 7.71" length, 5.16" width, 7.23" in height, and can apply to SLA batteries of both gel and AGM construction. U1 power chair and electric scooter battery packs are commonly found with ratings ranging from 31 amp hour to 35 amp hour. There are also half-U1 batteries available in a variety of ratings.

Amp Hour Rating
The amp hour rating of a scooter battery is an indication of travel range and between charge longevity. A higher or lower amp hour rating will not affect the battery's lifespan, nor will it change the scooter's top speed. Any mobility scooter will operate with the same U1 battery pack as any other. Think of an amp hour rating as an indication of the time length of a usable charge, but not necessarily its strength or volume.

Some mobility battery chargers use a low voltage sensor which will not allow it to active if the voltage of the power chair battery pack is significantly below 24 volts. Attempting to use a fully charged 12 volt mobility scooter battery and a very low charge battery may not power your mobility scooter. For this reason it is very important to replace your scooter's battery pack as a single unit; that is, to change both batteries at the same time instead of only installing a single new battery harnessed up to an older one.

For more information on selecting a scooter battery, visit the mobility experts at Monster Scooter Parts.

Article Source: EzineArticles.com

Electric Scooters - a quick overview

Electric Scooters - a quick overview
by Andre Easter

Recreational scooters have come a long way since the 'home-made skateboard on a stick' days. Today's electric scooter parts company with its simple kick-scooter beginnings by virtue of its technological sophistication and overall quality. Gaining in popularity by the day, these little electric vehicles are no longer just kids' toys; manufacturers have recently tapped into the urban commuter market with more heavy-duty models designed for adults. In the interest of brevity, electric mobility scooters for the disabled, as well as high-watt electric street-legal motor scooters fall outside of the scope of this brief overview, although many of the same scooter parts are common to the other categories as well. Parts for scooter models are often specific to a single brand or series; however a tire, inner-tube, or scooter battery may be interchangeable across a wide range of makes. Needless to say, a scooter charger to maintain the battery output is likewise usable on a multiplicity of items.

Stand up scooters:
The traditional stand up scooter is simply a motorized development of the traditional kick scooter. Made by a number of manufacturers, and sold under a host of brand names, these are perhaps the simplest and most basic of all motorized vehicles, even while incorporating refinements such as caliper brakes and pneumatic tires. These quiet and eco-friendly little personal vehicles come in a variety of sizes; from relatively low-watt versions of the stand-up kids' scooters, to superb high watt models expressly made for the adults. Economical to operate, non-polluting and pure joy on two small wheels, the popular electric scooter can be either a great way to have fun on the suburban blacktop, or a viable transportation alternative whose time has finally come.

Sit down scooters:
The addition of a seat to the electric stand up scooter allows for both a safer, less fatiguing ride, as well as greatly increased wattage, power and speed. From the smaller children's models to full 1000 watt beauties made for grown up kids, these are distinguished by beefier motors, disc brakes, and advanced electronics. Naturally, the bigger the motor, the bigger the scooter battery. With modern AGM batteries and the right scooter charger, these quiet machines are often capable of a top speed of 15 mph depending upon the weight of the rider.

Ride-on toys:
There are two kinds of recreational scooterists; kids, and those grown ups who haven't forgotten the joys of childhood. Ride-on toys are miniature electric versions of adult recreational vehicles, and may be found in a veritable smorgasbord of models and styles, from miniature go-karts, to ATV quads, dirt bikes, and more.

The Razor Pocket Mod miniature electric scooter stands out as one of the most thoughtfully aesthetic offerings in the entire realm of mini-scooters and ride-on toys. These little electric scooters are based on the vintage Lambretta scooters of the 1950s and '60s. Praised in Newsweek, TIME and Teen Vogue, the Razor Pocket Mod is a blend of classic Italian design flair coupled with modern, eco-friendly electric power.

Electric bicycles:
Closely associated with recreational scooters, electric bikes are found all over the world as the daily transportation of choice for many people. With today's growing eco-consciousness, electric bicycles are finding new favor with both the recreational user and the urban commuter who wishes to say goodbye to the pollution belching demands of the internal combustion engine. Available in both ultra-modern designs, as well as more traditional 'cruiser' styles, these high performance electric bikes are often available with the efficient and environmentally friendly lithium-ion battery system.

An attribute common to all recreational electric scooters, is that they are all designed to be fun. Whether intended for older children or strictly as adults-only machines, an electric scooter is all about the ecstasy of movement. Unfortunately many big-box and online retailers do not offer much in the way of customer support after the sale. Parts for scooter repairs are seldom available from the scooter dealers themselves, and must be purchased through an aftermarket scooter parts company. There are currently several reputable mail-order and online scooter parts dealers to fill this necessary and growing niche market

If you have more questions about electric scooters or scooter parts in general, visit the electric scooter parts experts at Monster Scooter Parts for more information.

Article Source: Hubpages.com

Scooter Parts - Making Sense of Motor Scooter Tire Sizes

Scooter Parts - Making Sense of Motor Scooter Tire Sizes
By Andre Easter

Selecting the right scooter parts can often be a challenging process for the first-time motor scooter owner. Of all the parts for scooter repair or replacement, few are as initially confusing as determining the correct scooter tire size for your rims. However, once you learn the 'secret code' of tire sizing, you should have no trouble selecting the right rubber for your street-legal machine.

Most of the confusion is due to two different systems in use concurrently; the older inch-pattern, and the newer, hybrid millimeter/inch system. A classic example of an inch-pattern scooter tire size is the 3.50-10. These are still very common on vintage Italian scooters, their modern clones and look-alikes. Simply read 3.50-10 as the inch measurement of the scooter's rim; in this case, 3-1/2 inches by 10 inches. Other popular inch-pattern sizes are 3.00-10 and 3.5-8.

The newer hybrid millimeter/inch coding is where it becomes a bit complicated. This will always read as three sets of numerals separated by a slash (the millimeters) and a hyphen (the inches). A typical example is the common size 120/70-10. The numbers before the slash (in this case 120) designates the width of the tire in millimeters when mounted and inflated. These two or three digits will range from about 80 to 160.

The two digits following the slash are called the Aspect Ratio, usually between 50 and 90, and are read as a percentage. Multiply the width (the number before the slash mark) by the aspect ratio number, and the result gives the tire's height between the rim bead and the tread. For example, multiplying 120 x.70 shows this tire has a height of 84 mm. The number following the hyphen represents the inch measurement of the rim diameter.

Thus a 120/70-10 tire would be 120mm wide, 84mm from tread to rim, and 10 inches from top to bottom of the rim. Buying the best rubber scooter parts becomes really simple when you learn to read the code.

Many of the early scooters from the 1950s and '60s, and many of today's retro-styled models, sported front and rear rims of the same size. Usually in an 8 or 10 inch diameter, these were the classic 'little wheels' of the Golden Age of scooterdom. Sharing an attribute with their larger motorcycle siblings, many contemporary scooters require a wider or even larger diameter tire on the rear wheel than on the front. This is most often the case with scooters bearing larger displacement engines; the 50 and 125cc powerplants of yesterday just didn't require the same amount of rubber on the blacktop to ensure gyroscopic stability as today's 250cc maxi-scooters.

Most major scooter tire manufacturers such as Kenda and Michelin have fitment charts on their websites. Making matters simple as possible for the scooter owner; you can just search for your scooter's make and model, and then see just what rubber is made for it. Selecting the right rubber parts for scooter rims has never been so painless.

For more information on scooter tires or other scooter parts visit the scooter experts at Monster Scooter Parts.

Article Source: EzineArticles.com

Electric Scooter Parts - Replacing a CDI Module

Electric Scooter Parts - Replacing a CDI Module
by Andre Easter

One of the most common of electric scooter parts in need of replacement, the CDI module is as essential to the scooter ignition system as the spark plug. Thought to be an invention of the brilliant Nikola Tesla, the Capacitor Discharge Ignition (CDI) is the standard system used on most of today's gas-powered motor scooters, as well as on many motorcycles, marine outboards and other small engines. A complete CDI module is made up of a transformer, the charging circuit, the rectifier, a capacitor, and the trigger circuit.

How the CDI Module Works
The transformer first raises the voltage to 400 to 600 volts. Moving along the charging circuit, the electric current charges the capacitor, with the rectifier preventing the capacitor from discharging before the ignition point. Receiving the triggering signal, the trigger circuit stops charging and allows the capacitor to discharge to the low inductance ignition coil. This increases the original 400-600 Volt capacitor discharge to as much as 40 kV at the secondary winding, jumping the spark plug gap, and igniting the gas/air mixture in the cylinder. The charging circuit is then reconnected and resumes charging the capacitor all over again.

AC or DC?
Most current scooters us an alternating current (AC) system; however the popular KYMCO scooter brand uses direct current (DC). As a result, electric scooter parts for KYMCO machines, including the CDI module, can sometimes be difficult to find.

Engine Size
It is always best to match the engine size to the CDI specifications. A CDI module made for a 50cc engine might work on a 100cc, 125cc, or 150cc engine, and some are designed to function over a range of engine sizes. Others however, will only work for a particular engine displacement. Always check the specifications to be sure of getting the correct scooter ignition parts.

2-stroke and 4-stroke Scooter Ignition
The 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines are completely different, and as a result, their engines' ignition timing is totally different as well. You cannot use a CDI made for a 2-stroker on a 4-stroke scooter. Conversely, you cannot use a 4-stroke scooter's CDI on a 2-stroke scooter.

Connectors
On many current CDIs, the connectors are integral to the unit's case, forming a plug that snaps directly on to the scooter's wiring harness. On other models, the connectors may be located on wires, allowing some leeway on exactly where the module is mounted. The skillful mechanic may shorten or lengthen these wires as necessary. The most common CDI connector style uses two plugs side by side; one 4-pin plug, and a 2-pin plug. These connectors may be square, rectangular, or simple spades.

Note: Photo illustrations of many CDI connectors can be seen at the website listed at the bottom of this article.

Unrestricted or Restricted?
An unrestricted (or racing) CDI provides the current no matter how high the engine RPMs go. As the CDI controls the spark plug, the plug will continue to fire at high RPM. For reasons that should be obvious, these CDI units are made for racing use, and are not very suitable for regular highway use. A restricted CDI module however, will stop firing once a pre-set engine RPM is attained. Without current reaching the spark plug, the engine RPMs slow to below the pre-set limit and only then will the CDI resume providing current to the plug.

When replacing a CDI module, or any other scooter ignition or electric scooter parts, it is always a good idea to reference your owner's manual. If the manual is lost or otherwise missing, many manufacturers and brands have downloadable manuals available on their websites

For more information on finding the right CDI module or other electric scooter parts, visit the scooter experts at Monster Scooter Parts.

Article Source: EzineArticles.com

Replacing a Scooter Charger

Replacing a Scooter Charger
By Andre Easter

Few things in life are as frustrating as a lost or damaged scooter charger when your batteries are low. The electric scooter charger is more than an accessory; it is an essential part of the machine; as vital as the gas pump is to the automobile driver. Please note that although this article is written primarily about the electric scooter battery charger units used on small recreational scooters like the various Currie, Razor, and other models; much of the information below is applicable to many electric mobility scooter models as well. The popular gasoline-powered motor scooters such as the Vespa, Honda or KYMCO types use standard motorcycle or light-duty automotive chargers with alligator clip connectors.

Every new scooter comes with an owner's manual, and the manufacturer's recommendations should always be followed. If the manual is unavailable, the next step should be an online search; many manufacturers' websites contain model specification data charts, owners' manuals and other information that can be downloaded as PDF documents. If an online search proves fruitless, there is still another method that will provide a usable "guesstimation" of just what battery charger would work best for their scooter. The three primary criteria are: connector type, voltage, and amperage.

Connectors
Perhaps the most vital yet confusing aspect of determining which electric scooter battery charger is correct for your scooter is the multiplicity of charger-to-scooter connector types. Unfortunately there has never been a single industry-wide standard to regulate the electrical connectors on scooter chargers. Until this state of affairs changes, there are at least eight styles in common use:

2-prong Female, not as common as the 3-prong style, this is still found on some smaller scooters

3-prong Female, identified by its three holes in a triangle, this is the most common connector for stand-up scooters

Coaxial, most are 5.5mm outside diameter - 2.1mm inside diameter plug; however BladeZ scooters used a proprietary 5.5mm outside diameter - 2.5mm inside diameter plug

XLR, very similar to the metal-shrouded connectors used in home audio and theater applications, the durable XLR connector is used many electric recreational, mobility scooters and power chairs

3-pin Shrouded Female (IEC C13), used primarily on electric bicycles, this is the familiar desktop computer power connector with three vertical slots

Modified 3-pin Shrouded Female, almost identical to the IEC C13, this e-bike connector is identified by a horizontal slot above the two vertical slots

Flat 4-pin, similar to that used for trailers, these connectors are mainly used on kids power ride-on toys (Power Wheels-type)

Direct Connect, these are the familiar alligator clip style that attach directly to your battery terminals

Adapters are available to match some dissimilar types of male and female connectors

Voltage Output
Just like in a common household flashlight, electric scooter batteries work by being wired together; all cells discharging their energy together and adding to the total sum of voltage. With the exception of a few 48 volt X-Treme and reverse-polarity Panterra models, almost all scooters use a 24 volt or 36 volt electrical system. If the proper voltage cannot be read off of the side of the electric motor's housing, then simply count the batteries. Two 12 volt batteries equal a 24 volt system; three batteries signify 36 volt, etc.

Amp Output
The amperage output of an electric scooter battery charger determines how fast the charging unit does its job. Shown as Amp Hour (Ah) ratings, the larger or more amperage output; the faster the recharge cycle. However the increase in amps also increases the size and cost of the charger. Additionally, a charger that is "too hot" for a low-amp battery runs the risk of overheating, damaging, or even destroying the battery. Conversely, a low-amp charger will seemingly take forever to charge a high-amp battery. The following list can be used to reach a workable happy medium between these extremes:

5 - 6 Ah battery, uses a 0.4 - 1.0 Ah charger

7 Ah battery uses a 1.0 - 2.0 Ah charger

9 - 10 Ah battery uses a 1.5 - 2.0 Ah charger

12 Ah battery uses a 1.5 - 4.0 Ah charger

18 Ah battery uses a 1.5 - 5.0 Ah charger

31-35 Ah (or U1) battery uses a 3.0 - 8.0 Ah charger

50 - 55 Ah (or 22NF) battery uses a 5.0 - 8.0 Ah charger

75 - 110 Ah battery uses an 8.0 Ah charger

Mobility Scooters and Power Chairs
Many makes and models of mobility scooters and power chairs use a factory-installed, on-board electric scooter battery charger designed specifically for that mobility device. These manufacturers' OEM parts should always be replaced with an identical unit from the scooter dealer, or from an online retailer of mobility scooter parts. Please check your owner's manual before installing an on-board charger.

For more information on selecting a scooter charger, visit the scooter experts at Monster Scooter Parts.

Article Source: EzineArticles.com

Monster Scooter Parts: A Scooter Part Story

We are Monster Scooter Parts. That's a fairly descriptive company name. Much more so than McDonald's, Walmart, Amazon.com, or ExxonMobil. A descriptive long company name is great for telling the world what you do just be reading the name, but we get called by many different names that are similar, but different, than Monster Scooter Parts all the time. Three words are easily confused. Not Monster, but the scooter parts part of it. Monster Scooters, Monster Scooter, Monster Motor Scooter, Monster, etc. And often we're called these names by close relatives! Ouch.

But getting back to our name, it is only descriptive if you know what those three words mean. Monster, yes, we know that one. Parts, yes, we know that one. But what exactly is a "scooter" anyway? And what is a scooter part?

That simple word, scooter, has guided Monster Scooter Parts to where we are today. A scooter part can represent different things to different people. Let's look through the world of scooters for a minute.

Looks like a scooter to me, an electric Razor E300. This is an easy one, you see this in any neighborhood on a nice sunny day. Monster Scooter Parts has a scooter part for that one.

Also a scooter. Not electrically driven though, powered by kicks; a kick scooter. Monster Scooter Parts has a scooter part for that also.

Yes, some also call this a scooter. Looks a bit different than the Razor E300 though. An electric mobility scooter. We have a scooter part for that one.

Many also call this a mobility scooter. Others would call it a powerchair, or power wheelchair. But take a look through Craigslist ads, and you'll quickly see that most of the classifieds for "mobility scooters" are actually powerchairs just like this Jazzy Select. Monster Scooter Parts has a powerchair part, or scooter part, for this powerchair.

Now this one, this surely isn't the same beast as that Jazzy Select is it? Also a scooter. We at Monster Scooter Parts have had great debates about the terminology of this vehicle, here the example is the great Honda Helix. Street Scooter, Motor Scooter? But we have a scooter part for this Honda Helix.

As an aside from this discussion, the Honda Helix is the latest darling of Monster Scooter Parts. In production off and on for 20 years, it's funky, it's a bit odd... it's awesome! Another blog post on that, but we're adding a huge list of OEM and aftermarket Honda Helix parts, just click the link below to take you there:

HONDA HELIX PARTS

Besides being a beautiful classic Honda Cub 50 and the highest production motorcycle in history, a scooter this is to our company historian. Me, I'd call it a motorbike, but back in the day I'm told it was known as a scooter. Not a CVT transmission like today's modern scooters, but a scooter to some. Monster Scooter Parts has a scooter part for this one also.

So what a slightly odd mix of products that we provide service to. But if you didn't know what the world called them, scooters, you may wonder how a company like Monster Scooter Parts ends up selling scooter parts for both a kick scooter, a Jazzy powerchair, and a Honda Helix. What? We put ourselves out there, and customers come to us with their definition of a scooter part, and a need, and we step in to fill that need. We've been doing that for the last 5 years, and will continue to do so in the future. Just don't call us Monster Scooter dot com. We are Monster Scooter Parts.

Glenn
glenn@monsterscooterparts.com
http://www.monsterscooterparts.com/

A Scooter by Any Other Name

The boss collects old scooters. His latest aquisitions -- a fairly recent KYMCO Agility 50 and a People 150-- got our collective juices flowing. KYMCO makes great scooters, but sometimes finding the right replacement parts can be challenging. Even locating the correct size 16" tires for the People and People S series scooters is often difficult as many local tire stores may never have even heard of 100/80-16 rubber.

My buddy Mike, the official Monster Scooter Parts mechanic and subject matter expert extraordinaire, tore the Agility 50 and People 150 down to their proverbial nuts & bolts and made a rather interesting discovery about parts compatibility. Although almost every other scooter manufacturer in the world uses AC CDI modules, KYMCO scooters require DC CDI modules! It took some doing, but we have located a source of supply for replacement DC CDI modules and are now awaiting the shipment. If you need a DC CDI and are frustrated with trying to get parts from a KYMCO dealer, give us a call.

Among some other identified replacement parts that we have in stock for the KYMCO Agility 50 scooter:

19 mm Carburetor with Electric Choke
Ignition Coil
12 Volt Electric Starter Motor
Clutch Shoe Assembly
Automatic choke unit
Tires, spark plugs, throttle cables, CVT belts, bulbs and more.

It came as a surprise a while back to find out that KYMCO scooters were from one of the top five makers of scooters and motorcycles in the world today, along with Piaggio (Vespas, Aprilias, et al.) and the Japanese Big Three (Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki). KYMCO (Kwang Yang Motor Company, Ltd) actually got its start as the subsidiary engine parts supplier to Honda. Unlike some of the generic (or best left unmentioned) scooter manufacturers on the Chinese mainland, the Taiwanese KYMCO continue to uphold Honda's high standards of quality control and assurance.

A Scooter by Any Other Name
"O, be some other name! What's in a name? That which we call a Grand Dink by any other name would smell as sweet." -- William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet, 1600

Well maybe the Bard's young Miss Capulet wasn't really pining away for her KYMCO Grand Dink scooter, but the sentiment remains the same. Of all the major scooter makers in the world, KYMCO evidently had a marketing crew with either the greatest sense of humor, or the least understanding of branding for the American scooter market. Scooter models with names like Yup, Top Boy, Bet & Win, Dink and the ultimate curiously (but very nobley) titled Grand Dink are all examples of KYMCO's undeniable silliness with the English language. In my mind I can hear the voice of an American public relations expert taking the KYMCO Vice President of International Marketing aside and saying; "uh sir... I don't think the folks here in the US will be all that enthusiastic about a scooter called the Yup. You may want to rename it into something that sounds a bit zippier like maybe 'the all-new KYMCO Sting 50' or something like that. Now about that Grand Dink thing..."

So other than the Bet & Win models, KYMCO naming in the USA is often quite different that that used in other parts of the world. I am still waiting to see the definitive cross reference listing of all the KYMCO scooter models, along with each of the various & sundry names used in different countries and when it was that they used them. Maybe not great literature for the casual reader, but for the die-hard scooter enthusiast or the student of international marketing it might make for more than a few raised eyebrows.

Andy
andy@monsterscooterparts.com
www.monsterscooterparts.com

New Scooter Tires and More New Scooter Tires

Scooter tires are getting bigger, and Monster Scooter Parts carries the larger size rubber for the bigger rims on today's heavier motor scooters. We have recently expanded our tire inventory to include the often hard-to-find 13", 14", 15" and 16" sizes found on the up-scale Aprilia, Derbi, KYMCO, and Piaggio models. Adding to our range of Innova, Kenda and Michelin scooter tires, we now have the Shinko and Vee Rubber brands in the larger sizes as well.

Additionally, we have added a new Michlin series, the Michelin City Grip Premium Scooter Tires. The City Grip replaces the manufacturer-discontinued Michelin Gold Standard and Pilot City series. We still have a few Gold Standard and Pilot City tires left in our warehouse stock, but once these are gone there may not be any more to be had for love or money.

Small + round = agility, big + round = gyroscopic stability
Back in the early salad days of scooterdom, the 3.50-8, 3.00-10 and 3.50-10 tires were the industry standards rolling underneath those classic old Lambrettas and Vespas that came buzzing out of Italy like a swarm of wingless wasps. Offering the exceptional agility needed on the venerable streets of Rome and boulevards of Paris, these little tires were best suited for the 49cc and 125cc relatively low horsepower 2-stroke engines of the day. As time went on and motor scooters became heavier, faster and more powerful, the qualities of enhanced nimbleness in the smaller wheels were negated by their lack of directional stability at high speed. Think about a gyroscope here; the bigger the wheel, the better it is at maintaining its forward direction.

Two very aesthetically pleasing lines of modern scooters are the Aprilia Scarabeo and KYMCO People series. Combining that great "wasp-waisted" body style with big 16" tires, these scooters are finding global favor with urban commuters world-wide. Good looks, fun to ride, and the undeniable safety and smoothness of bigger wheels all make for a winning and popular scooter combination.

Another innovative 21st Century design is the unrivaled Piaggio MP3 series. Using three big wheels in a reverse-tricycle arrangemment, these robust maxi-scooters definitely turn some heads when they pass by.

The earliest big-wheeled scooters that I personally remember are the Honda Cub C50 and Cub C70 that used 17" tires. And yes, Monster Scooter Parts stocks those classic sizes as well. The boss and I debate about whether Honda Cubs were called scooters back in the day, or were properly termed as "motorbikes." As I am the elder by almost two decades, I stand on the experience of my (sometimes misplaced) memory. As the signer of paychecks, he stands on an even greater authority. Also in his favor is a contemporary 1960's pop tune where it was refered to as a "groovy little motorbike."

Andy
andy@monsterscooterparts.com
www.monsterscooterparts.com/

Account Registration at Monster Scooter Parts

Monster Scooter Parts recently revamped our account registration feature on our website to enhance your shopping experience. It’s time to pull those scooters out of storage for some warm weather fun. Before the kids hop on to go for their first ride of the season don’t forget to make sure your scooter batteries have a good charge. It’s always a good idea to test them with a battery tester or multimeter to make sure that they are putting out the 12, 24, or 36 volts that your batteries should be putting out. If they do not test well, then it’s time to replace your battery with one of our replacement battery packs such as the 36 Volt Battery for the Minimoto ATV, Go Kart, Jeep Dune Buggy, Maxii 400, and Motocross XRF500 .

If you have misplaced your battery charger and can’t seem to find it since last fall when you last used it, we also have a variety of scooter battery chargers for your needs. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the RocknRoller® Multi-Cart® series, these are rolling platforms especially designed to meet the requirements of musicians, DJs, videographers and other industry professionals who need a sturdy and convenient way to move their piles of gear around.

In designing the RocknRoller® Multi-Cart®, the engineers figured out that the very best size tires and inner tubes for their products were the same tires and inner tubes found on some scooters. For instance, the RocknRoller® Multi-Cart® R12 uses a 10"x3" (3.00-4) tube and tire that is used on a wide number of recreational scooters such as the Razor E-300 and X-Treme X-500. Another example is a smaller 8"x2-1/2" (2.50-4) inner tube that is found on many mobility scooters. RocknRoller appreciates that Monster Scooter Parts is the best place to locate these otherwise hard to find sizes. Likewise, Monster Scooter Parts appreciates RocknRollers' appreciation of us!

Pardon my redundancy, but Monster Scooter Parts sells parts for scooters. (duh!) We offer parts for recreational scooters like Razors and Curries, motor scooter parts for street-legal Hondas and Vespas, and also parts for Pride, Invacare, Rascal and other brands of mobility scooters and power chairs. We sell tires and inner tubes --lots of tires and inner tubes. Now we are suppliers of a minor but very essential part to the music and entertainment industry as well. And we are proud of that.

What goes around...
It has been said by many pundits and philosophers over the centuries that each person is a product of their own times. Meaning of course that we are who and what we are because we live in the times that we do. People today are surrounded by and exposed to early-21st century culture and technology that our ancestors couldn't dream up in their wildest mead-soaked fantasies.

So I kind of bristle at the gall of news and e-zine writers who make rediculous statements drawing parallels between modern events and historical persons of the past. "What would Ben Franklin say about shopping on the internet?" Or perhaps how Alexander the Great might balance the Federal Budget. You know what I mean; we hear and read stuff like this all of the time. Let's be real here, Old Ben wouldn't know how to open a PDF attachment any more than I know how to shoe a mule. We are all the children of our own times and no other.

I mention this because I am of an age to remember when most kids had the dream of growing up to be a rock-star. OK, a lot wanted to be rhythm & blues stars, but R&B and rock & roll were still closely related musical cousins in the 1960s and '70s. That proverbial thin red line of division was even thinner back then, with groups like Rare Earth, the Animals, and Sly & the Family Stone blurring any distinction between the two genres as to make the distinctions utterly meaningless.

Suffice it to say that no kids the I knew wanted to grow up and play the sousaphone tuba in a polka band, but that may have just been our regional preferences. Maybe kids in Milwaukee or Pierre, South Dakota were different from we Virginians.

But kids today all want to be rappers. They can't seem get enough of that hippity-hop music. I visit my old hometown in Virginia Beach, and all the kids want to be rappers. I fly out to California, and all the kids want to be rappers. I try to broaden my horizons a bit by watching the French news network on cable, and what do you think the kids in Paris want to be? (Hint: NOT sousaphone tuba players.)

So times change and the popular taste in music changes right along with it. Another new generation comes along to spend their money according to the fashion of the hour as defined by the marketers and promoters on Madison Avenue and Los Angeles. There has been an almost unbelievable advance in recording technology in the past half-century; everything from 45s and 33-1/3rd vinyl LPs, and on through 8-tracks, audio cassettes, CDs, to the now ubiquitous iPod. But inspite of all this technology in recording and playback, the essential fact of all music is that it must be played first by a real human musician.

Musicians today not only need their instruments, but they also require a plethora of sound systems and ancillary gear to lug around. The folks who make the RocknRoller® Multi-Cart® are doing just fine manufacturing the equipment movers essential to bands, orchestras, news crews, TV networks and even sports teams. We are rather proud that the RocknRoller® website recommends Monster Scooter Parts for spare inner tubes. Although we are a scooter-centric bunch, we now grudgingly admit that there are things with wheels that aren't even scooters!

Like the youth of today, I am a product of my own times and musical tastes. Just when I think I can't stand to hear any more of that hippitty-hop music, my thoughts go back to when I was 14 and grooving to Iron Butterfly playing "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida." To this day I can hear my mother's voice yelling out for me to "turn that nerve-wracking noise off! Are you trying to grow up to be a hippie?"

Andy
andy@monsterscooterparts.com
www.monsterscooterparts.com/

Inner Tubes, Scooters and the Last Days of Summer

Last week we had a delivery truck come in with bundles of tires and box loads of inner tubes in all kinds of sizes for recreational scooters. I counted almost three dozen different sizes of tubes from 8 X 2s all the way up to the 20 X 2.4 size. One of the most popular tubes of them all is the ubiquitous 12-1/2" x 2.5/3.0 inner tube. This scooter inner tube is puncture resistant and comes with an angled valve stem. A size common to a great number of scooters, the 12-1/2" x 2.5/3.0 inner tube will fit so many scooters that I cannot even begin to list them here. Just click on the link here to see the compatibility list. So versatile an inner tube, it even fits on a number of wheelchairs.

Why do some scooter tires still use inner tubes when tubeless is almost the rule these days? Well it mostly comes down to mounting and repair. A typical tubeless scooter tire is stiffer and will still allow emergency riding at very low air pressure; however they can be a bear to replace. The same qualities of stiffness that keep a tubeless scooter tire on the rim -even when almost totally deflated- mean that getting them on or back off of the rim is sometimes a time-consuming, frustrating, and possibly knuckle-skinning chore.

A scooter tire with a puncture resistant tube, like our 12-1/2" x 2.5/3.0 inner tube, is far easier to fix and remount. The tube holds the air pressure, so the tire itself doesn't need to create the air-tight seal on the rim. Rims can get damaged, bent and dirty without creating too many problems for the tire. As such, scooter inner tubes are preferred by many riders due to the ease of repair. Additionally, many riders prefer tires with inner tubes due to what they perceive as smoothness of the ride. Those air-filled donuts do double duty as shock absorbers.

Back in the proverbial Olden Days of Yore, almost all tires used inner tubes. Whether on cars, trucks, aeroplanes or bicycles; if it was a tire it had a tube inside of it. Scooters had not really made much of an appearance in the US until the mid-1960s, and even those were the street-legal gas-powered motor scooters like the Vespas and Honda Cub 50s. Electric scooters like the various eZips and IZIPs and Razors and such weren't even thought of yet. Even if they had been, they would have had tires with tubes.

If you picked up a nail, you put a patch on the tube to get rolling again. Almost all kids who had a bike sooner or later made the trip to the hardware or dime store (anyone remember those?) for the little repair kit in the can. They came with a 4X4 square of rubber, some glue, and a textured metal lid like a cheese-grater that you could use to roughen up the rubber prior to slapping a carefully-cut and glue-smeared rubber patch over the nail puncture. You practiced on your bike tires because you knew that sooner or later you would be grown up and repairing the rubber on your (hopefully) future Mustang or GTO in the same way. I don't think that "puncture resistant" had been thought of yet, not for small vehicle inner tubes anyway.

With all of those inner tubes in circulation -(no pun intended)- there was always a few old ones ready to find a new lives as rafts. Swimming pools, ponds, creeks, branches, runs, rivers, ocean waves, inlets, lagoons, and swimming holes of every description and water level would be festooned with kids floating and frolicking on old inner tubes. And that was just what summer was for.

Hint: if you want to re-create the joys of inner-tube rafting, use a tube with an angled valve stem pointed down. Not heeding this advice will sooner or later result in a very intense pain in a place that you really don't want to get hurt. 'Nuff said.

And then they invented the tubeless tire and rafting became rarer each year. They also invented a lot of other things that took away the fun of being a kid on summer vacation. Then they told you about this terrible thing called work that would replace your carefree summer delights as soon as you turned 17 or 18 and life would never be the same.

It is now late September and the summer has flown off south with the Canadian geese. Perhaps to Uruguay or Argentina or wherever it is that summer retreats to. A Southern Hemisphere location anyway. The kids are back in school trying to decipher the algebra that most will never again have any practical use for, and those of us who live in the coastal South-eastern and Mid-Atlantic region will keep one ear on the weather forecast, always on the alert for terms like "growing tropical depression" and "maximum sustained winds."

September morphs into October with its cooler nights, small-town Oktoberfest celebrations and the sound of Vince Guaraldi playing his magnum opus "Linus & Lucy" on the piano. Mr. Guaraldi may have passed away decades ago, but his classic soundtrack to the Peanuts television specials like "The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown" was the first introduction for millions of us to the joys of listening to genuine jazz. The cooler weather of autumn reminds me that I might never again get to drift down the lazy creek in an old inner tube. Somehow trying to float on a tubeless steel-belted puncture resistant radial just doesn't cut it.

Maybe I could tie up a bunch of these puncture resistant 12-1/2" x 2.5/3.0 scooter inner tubes (heavy-duty thorn resistant with angled valve stem), take my shoes off and pretend I'm floating down stream.

Andy
andy@monsterscooterparts.com
www.monsterscooterparts.com/

Modern Times... or is it Post-Modern now?

One of the best-selling items that we have here at Monster Scooter Parts is a little 3-prong, 24 volt battery charger that we call the "Razor Pocket Rocket & Pocket Mod (Bella, Betty, Bistro, Daisy, iMod & Vapor) Battery Charger (Standard)." The name is almost bigger than the product, and these popular battery chargers are usable on a wide range of recreational electric scooters. We also list this battery charger as the generic 24 Volt 1.6 Amp 3-Prong Battery Charger (Standard) but both item names refer to the same thing. These work on those little electric scooters that swarms of kids zip around with on countless suburban sidewalks and cul-de-sacs when Saturday morning cartoons are over and their parents have claimed the big screen television to watch the cooking shows on PBS.

Please don't get the idea that I am endorsing one scooter manufacturer over any other, but I admit that I think that those little Razor Pocket Rockets and Pocket Mods are some of the cutest kids' products ever made. Scaled-down replicas of the classic old Euro-scooters of the 1950s and '60s, these represent a masterful marketing endeavour by Razor to introduce the street scooter concept to another generation of riders. By patterning their ride-on toys after a design style that has world-wide recognition, Razor has all but guaranteed that some of these kids are going to buy full-sized street scooters when they are older.

Electric scooters for kids have been around for a few years now and the idea is catching on for adult models as well. In these eco-concious times the term "green" has taken on a new meaning for both the consumers and manufacturers. Whether this signals a fundamental change in global priorities, or just another faddish affectation remains to be seen, but there is no denying that environment-friendly personal transportation is a growing business. The Powers That Be tell us we need to wean ourselves off of our addiction to fossil fuels, and all for the better future of our dear old planet. The gasoline 2-stroke scooter engines of the past have all but been replaced by the cleaner-burning, less pollution-spewing 4-stroker designs. Eco-friendly hybrid-electric technology holds a lot of promise for the near future, while an almost mythical hydrogen-powered utopia always seems to be just out of reach.

The street-legal scooter, whether gasoline-powered or electric, has been enjoying quite a burst of popularity lately here in the US. Sales are increasing even as other economic indicators are down. Still relatively rare just a half-decade ago, scooters like Vespas and Honda Silverwings and a host of other models are now begining to populate the urban asphalt and the suburban side-streets. I have begun to see full-powered 250cc scooters burning up the roads of rural Maryland and Virginia, places where you once saw a Ford or Chevy pick-up in every driveway. There are even rumors that Harley-Davidson is doing the R&D for another scooter model, maybe an up-dated and refined version of their long out of production 1965 Topper model. Perhaps Dylan said it best when when he sang that the times they are a'changing.

I don't want to tell you how old I am, but when I was a kid "The Jetsons" was on prime-time television. There were only three channels back then and Ed Sullivan had the closest thing to reality TV. Men were orbiting the Earth in Mercury capsules and we were all being led into a bright and prosperous new future where every kid was going fly to school on their very own jet-pack strapped to their backs. We didn't see "The Jetsons" as another mindless cartoon whose strategic goal was to get us to consume more sugar-coated cereal products; we watched "The Jetsons" because it was prophecy! We saw on the news how NASA was developing real jet-packs, and that dad was going to get a flying car, and sometime in the not-too-distant future people would be living on the moon and vacationing on Mars. Well, the future didn't quite turn out that way. Dad never got his flying car and by the time I graduated from high school I still hadn't gotten my promised jet-pack.

I sit here and contemplate what it would have been like if "The Jetsons" really was the harbinger of our future. Would I be writing the blog for Monster Scooter & Jet-pack Parts? Maybe so, and I bet that we would have the correct battery charger for it too.

Andy
andy@monsterscooterparts.com
http://www.monsterscooterparts.com/

The Scooter Brake that Stopped the Experts!

Straight from the Official Monster Scooter Parts Dictionary:
expert
noun, EK-spurt

1. a person with special skills or knowledge in a particular field

2. ex (a has been), and spert (from "spurt" -a drip under pressure)

Here at Monster Scooter Parts we have a whole warehouse filled with the miscellaneous odds and ends that every scooter owner sooner or later needs to keep on scootin' in style. We have tires and chargers and gaskets and batteries. Look in the corner and you will discover seat cushions and clutches, transmissions and throttle cables, all piled up to the ceiling in a neat and orderly fashion. Need a new electric widget harness? Widget parts; Aisle 7, Shelf B-14. In the market for a replacement gonculator assembly for a 1973 Pasta Motors Parmesan? Look on Rack 420, right above the custom chrome wine bottle holders. Having such a large and diverse inventory as we do, it really shouldn't come as any surprise when every once in a great while something comes across the desk that totally stumps us as to the whats, the whys and the wherefores of its origin.

Here is a good example; a genuine "Internal Expanding Rear Brake Drum Assembly-90 mm". Frankly, I have never before seen an internal expansion drum brake assembly on a scooter. All of the small scooter brake units that I have seen use brake shoes that contract or clamp-down onto the brake drum, providing the braking pressure. This little brake unit's shoes expand outwards to grip the inside of the drum.

Scooter parts are not usually very complicated pieces of engineering, and most generic parts will (more often than not) fit a multiplicity of scooter makes and models. Consider the ubiquitous 50cc 4-Stroke GY6 139QMB engine, a classic little power-house providing the putt-putt for millions of scooters around the world. It's a pretty safe bet that most any part for this engine will work on dozens of different manufacturers' scooters.

And then there is this little mystery brake that defies all of our collective expertise. Lettering on the outside of the housing proclaims this is a "Servo Brake" from Xun Lin Brake. But try as we "experts" may, no one here at MSP can say for certain just what scooter models these brakes fit. It isn't the right brake for a Baja Doodle Bug nor is it anything made by Razor. I think it may be for an electric bike, but my wife tells me that thinking is just what gets me into trouble. The brake passes from expert to expert. Heads get scratched and chins get stroked. We hold it up to view like Hamlet with poor Yorick's skull, all the while trying to look more thoughtful than confused.

Perhaps this esoteric mechanical marvel is the long-lost missing part that you need to get your scooter or ebike up and running again. Or maybe this is just what you were looking for to complete that home-built custom project in your garage. We have a few of these brake assemblies in both 90 mm and 100 mm sizes, and they are priced right at $9.99 per unit.

Here's the links to see these two brake units:

Internal Expanding Rear Brake Drum Assembly-90 mm

Internal Expanding Rear Brake Drum Assembly-100 mm

OK; I confess, I made up the bit about the 1973 Pasta Motors Parmesan. Of course Monster Scooter Parts sells a good selection of replacement scooter and mini bike engines from its veritable smorgasbord of interesting stuff, so the big box labeled "Engine for Mini Bike" temporarily makes an excellent table for me to drop my hat and backpack upon.

But this is not just any garden variety mini bike engine. A little research into mini bike engines confirms this is the "97cc Engine for Baja Blitz, Dirt Bug, Doodle Bug, & Racer Mini Bike" and is probably destined to be mounted on someone's Baja Motor Sports recreational scooter. Opening up the box and taking a look, I see this "Engine for Mini Bike" would no doubt work well on any number of applications and garage projects. Mini bike engines, like other small gasoline-powered engines have come a long way in the past few years. It doesn't seem like that long ago when 49cc engines were the standard on street scooters, and a lot of mini bikes and such were home-built projects slung with an engine recycled from a push lawnmower.

This box will soon be gone; the new mini bike engine shipped out to someone with a Doodle Bug perhaps. Maybe it will find its calling in a custom-made, one of a kind, king of the dirt-track, mechanical masterpiece that is slowly taking shape in somebody's shop. I will just have to find my backpack and old fedora a new spot to rest.

That has me thinking about backpacks and how we carry our necessities around with us. My grandfather was a coal miner and each day he left home for the pits carrying his lunch pail. My dad carried a briefcase and today I carry my daily needs around, my lunch, iPod, CDs to upload onto my work computer, etc., in a small green and grey backpack. When I formerly worked in Washington DC, everyday I saw hundreds of people, from lawyers and receptionists to interns and petty bureaucrats pulling along those little suitcases with the tiny plastic wheels as if their trip to the office was an epic journey like a night flight to Buenos Aires and points beyond.

With these thoughts in mind, I have to wonder if our lives in the early 21st Century is really better than that of or parents and grandparents. Hmmm... comfy chair in an air-conditioned office at Monster Scooter Parts or a deep, dark mine-shaft? Brand new 97cc Engine for Baja Blitz, Dirt Bug, Doodle Bug, & Racer Mini Bike... or some rusted and greasy old lawnmower engine spared from the landfill?

A no brainer.

Andy
andy@monsterscooterparts.com
http://www.monsterscooterparts.com/

New Michelin Scooter Tires for Street Scooters

Monster Scooter Parts has recently received a huge shipment of Michelin scooter tires. We can now offer you a Michelin scooter tire in any one of seven lines:

Bopper

Gold Standard

Pilot City

Pilot Sport SC

Reggae

S1 Performance

S83 Retro

Particularly suited for today's higher-performance street scooters, the current line of Michelin scooter tires meet the very highest standards of safety, while excelling in terms of grip, durability, strength, and versatility.

A full set of specs for any Michelin scooter tire can be seen here in the Michelin 2009 Motorcycle & Scooter Tires brochure and fitment guide.

There was a time in the not-too-distant past when the Michelin brand wasn't exactly a household name in the United States. Tires sold in America were either made by Goodyear, Goodrich or Firestone. And a scooter, what's that? You mean one of those tiny little Italian motorcycles with training wheels stolen from some kid's bicycle? (If your earliest mental image of a motor scooter had Gina Lollobrigida zipping by on her Vespa in some arcane film by Federico Fellini, then you understand.) I suppose the term "urban commuter" existed too, but the phrase would no doubt be accompanied by the scene of thousands of pin-striped rat-race types being disgorged from the gaping mouth of the the underground subway station. And it must be in B&W; no mental images in color were allowed.

Most Americans didn't become acquainted with the Michelin name until about the late 1960s, even though the Michelin brand was just as recognizable and respected in the rest of the world as any of the American brands were to us. Then they went and invented the oil shortages and carbon footprints [feetprint?] and all of the other worries and concerns that plague our the post-modern world. The planet has shrunk down a lot in the past 40 years and the street-legal scooter has evolved from just being a chic European icon into a dependable form of daily transportation for millions. Here in America, Michelin is now to tires what apples are to pie. Monster Scooter Parts is proud to offer a broad selection of these world-renown Michelin scooter tires.

And today's urban commuters get to think in color.

Andy
andy@monsterscooterparts.com
http://www.monsterscooterparts.com./

New Electric Scooter Motors Added

A wide variety of electric scooter motors for recreational and street scooters has recently been added. All of their current models can be found on our full size scooter parts page:

Street Legal Scooter Parts

Glenn
glenn@Monsterscooterparts.com
http://www.monsterscooterparts.com/

Power Chair Battery Chargers

We continue to strive towards our goal of providing the widest online selection of mobility scooter parts. All models have an air cooled 2 stroke engine with CDI ignition. All models (with the exception of the Honda Lead 50) have leading link front suspension, electric and kick start, and a fuel gauge. The Honda Lead 50 has traditional telescopic fork front suspension and ONLY electric start. All models have drum breaks, speedo, CVT transmission."

ELITE

"In the early 1980s, Honda hit the market with a line of scooters known as the CH series, comprising the CH50, 80, 125, 150, and 250 models. In the U.S., these were known as "Elite" scooters but overseas they were marketed under the "Spacy" name. While they were useful as "scooters", generally their performance and comfort levels limited them to short trips. However, when the CH250 was introduced it could reach highway speeds and be used for long-range touring. This new use of scooters (that is, the CH250) was mainly confined to the United States. Even with the Elite 250 writing a new definition of the word scooter, it still suffered from the limitations of all scooters: limited storage capacity, short wheelbase, small size and not comfortable enough for extended riding periods.

Honda's response was the CN250 or Helix. Honda had lengthened the CH250 by 14 inches, placed an integrated trunk in the rear of the machine and lowered the seat. The added length allowed what many have referred to as a "Barcalounger" seating position and a smoother ride than that of previous models. The top speed of the machine was limited to 70-75, (however speeds of 77 have been obtained) MPH (about 113-121 km/h) but the drivetrain was of an understressed design allowing extended running at or near top speed."

Please check back often as we are currently updating our site with compatible scooter parts for Yamaha, Baja Motorsports, EVT America, Hyosung, Meitian, Panterra, Suzuki, DDR, and E-Ton scooters.

Glenn
glenn@Monsterscooterparts.com
http://www.monsterscooterparts.com/

Baja Motorsports ATV Parts and More!

We are pleased to announce that we are now an authorized repair and service center for the entire Baja Motorsports lineup, providing original equipment replacement parts for Baja Motorsports all terrain vehicles, dirt bikes, go-karts, mini bikes, motorcycles, and street legal scooters. We feel brief, numerous entries discussing the technical challenges in repairing and replacing your electric and gas scooter parts will be of a great value.

Today's topic: Universal Scooter Controllers.

A late addition in 2007, our new universal speed & voltage controllers page is here:

Universal Scooter Controllers

We've provided as much detail as possible regarding the connections of our controllers, namely connections for the scooter electric motor, battery pack, battery charger, keyswitch, and the scooter throttle, just to name a few. However, there are hundreds of varieties of branded and generic electric scooters that have been sold in the United States, and many using a different factory for their scooter parts. Often times the connectors on our voltage controllers do not match up with the connections on our customer's particular motor scooter.

Our customer service agents and technical support team will do their best to communicate with you and get your motorized scooter on the road again using our replacement parts. However, often times, even with pictures emailed back and forth, it will fall upon the customer to identify the function of your wiring on your electric scooter. It may be necessisary to keep your old controller connected, and follow the unmarked controller connector's wiring thru your scooter to identifiy where it goes. For example, if a set of wires lead back to your handlebars and to your scooter's hand throttle, that is the wiring for the hand throttle. Knowing that, you can simply match those wires up to the wires provided on our voltage controller, with the details listed on Monster Scooter Part's website.

Additionally, in our Razor scooter parts lineup we have Razor controllers here:

Razor Scooter Parts - Controllers

And finally, in our Schwinn, Mongoose, IZIP, and GT scooter parts lineup we have Currie Technology controllers here:

Schwinn Scooter Parts - Controllers

Best of luck, and check back often. We have additional selections of scooter parts on order, and our scooter controller section will offer an expanded lineup in the near future.

Keeping you rolling,

Glenn
glenn@monsterscooterparts.com
http://www.monsterscooterparts.com/

New Scooter Engines, Battery Packs, and New Products

Been out of the mix for some time now, but the Monster Scooter Parts Blog returns! Pre-wired battery packs require no cutting, splicing, soldering, special connectors, or tools by the customer. Upon receipt of the battery, simply plug in the battery pack and go!

In the past pre-wired battery packs were available only from the manufacturer on select models, and were relatively expensive as they are OEM parts. That basically limited pre-wired battery packs to Currie Technology and Razor Scooter USA products. Additionally, the Razor pre-wired battery packs are EXTREMELY difficult to keep in stock due to high demand and limited availability from the manufacturer.

Monster Scooter Parts is now offering an expanded line of pre-wired battery packs that are wired in house at our facility. We are working directly with factories in China to procure the wiring harnesses and unique connectors needed to fabricate the pre-wired battery packs for as many brands as possible. Below is a list of new battery packs that are now in stock:

Minimoto 18 Volt Sport Racer Pre-Wired Battery Pack

Minimoto 36 Volt Maxii, ATV, and Go Kart Pre-Wired Battery Pack

Schwinn, Mongoose, GT, & IZIP Scooter 24 Volt 10 Ah Pre-Wired Battery Pack

Within 30 days, we will be offering pre-wired battery packs for most Razor scooters and dirt bikes, in supplement to many of the OEM Razor pre-wired battery packs, many of which are currently out of stock:

Razor 24 Volt Scooter Pre-Wired Battery Packs

Additionally, we hope to offer pre-wired batteries for Sea-Doo Seascooters as well

Sea-Doo Seascooters

Making it as easy as possible for our customers to get back on the road is our goal at Monster Scooter Parts!

Glenn
glenn@monsterscooterparts.com
www.monsterscooterparts.com

Minimoto Parts Have Arrived!

We received the long awaited parts shipment of Minimoto ATV tires, Maxii tires, and battery connectors needed to complete the Minimoto 18 volt and 36 volt battery packs. While electric scooters are “green” vehicles in that they do not produce airborne exhaust gases that are harmful to the environment, they do carry an extremely toxic material onboard: LEAD, in the form of lead acid in scooter batteries.

Lead poisoning can cause a number of health problems, such as brain damage, kidney damage, hearing impairment, diarrhea, lethargy, and learning disabilities in children. These are very serious health concerns.

Many states have enacted legislation that requires recycling of lead acid batteries. Typically local and state governments provide a means of accepting used batteries, and that is where you should look first when trying to find a facility to recycle your used scooter batteries.

Additionally, many private retailers will accept your used scooter batteries as part of the Call2Recycle program. Additional information can be found at www.rbrc.com. Below is a partial list of national retailers where you can take your scooter battery for recycling:

Circuit City
Grainger
Home Depot
Lowe’s
Office Depot
Office Max
Radio Shack
Sam’s Club
Sears
Target
Wal-Mart

You can find additional information at www.earth911.org, including a nice recycling location search feature.

Please do the right thing and recycle those scooter batteries!

www.MonsterScooterParts.com

Minimoto Parts

We recently learned that Toy Quest has discontinued the Minimoto line of electric scooters and they have decided to no longer support these products with replacement parts. Minimoto has been referring many of their customers to us and we look forward to the opportunity to serve the needs of those customers now and in the future!

Unfortunately, some of the most popular Minimoto replacement parts are out of stock right now. However, we are working hard to get these parts back in stock as quickly as possible.

36 volt 3-prong battery chargers for all Minimoto 36 volt products will be back in stock by April 9, 2007!

We also hope to have Minimoto ATV/Dune Buggy 10x4-6 tires and Minimoto Maxii 4.00-6 tires back in stock by April 25, 2007. Unfortunately, we are still working on locating inner tubes for these tires. Hopefully we will get some soon! Tires and tubes for the Motocross XRF500 should be available around July 1, 2007.

Minimoto OEM 36 volt and 18 volt batteries are nearly impossible to find. However, we are working on developing fully-compatible plug-and-play battery packs comprised of three 12 volt batteries (36 volts) and three 6 volt batteries (18 volts) that will fit all Minimoto 18 volt and 36 volt products. We hope to have these battery packs completed and ready to sell by April 30, 2007.

We are also working on getting 18 volt 3-prong battery chargers for the Minimoto Sport Racer in stock soon. These may not become available until June 2007.

So please do not toss out your busted Minimoto product just yet! We will continue adding new Minimoto parts based on demand and we look forward to getting your scooters back up and running again soon! Please e-mail us if you have any questions.

http://www.monsterscooterparts.com/minimoto.html
